Khuan Yee Lion Dance Association

About Us

The Khuan Yee Lion Dancing Association was originally founded in December 2004. The team is a formally structured Association for youths that express a keen interest and love of lion dancing. At present the size of the team stands around 20 with new recruits joining yearly. The standard of training and expectancy of the members’ skill levels are higher than other teams. The reason for this lie in the international level that the team bases it’s standard against. To be able to compete against the rest of the world, the skills and abilities of the Association must be fairly high and consistent.

The World Lion Dancing Championships

The World Lion Dancing Championships is the pinnacle of the ‘sport’. Teams from all over the world collectively meet in either Malaysia or China to win the 20kg trophy. The winner of the Championships is considered the best in the World and school is aptly named the ‘Lion King”.

Through the inclusion of Khuan Yee, Australia had its first representative at the Championships.

In competing, each team is given 12 minutes for the lion to ascend a layout of poles some 3 metres in the air to collect the ‘Choi’. The team that presents the most impressive performance whilst keeping with tradition scores the most points.

Training

The training that the team does is highly intense especially when preparing on the poles. The troupe does insist on teamwork at all times and are very selective in choosing its members. Maintaining a good attitude is just as important and is invariably displayed in our performances.
